Latics take on Everton tomorrow in the FA cup quarter-finals, this is only the second time in our history that we have progressed to this stage of the competition, the last time coming way back in 1987 when we were unlucky to lose to Leeds United 2-0 at Springfield Park
Facing Everton away may seem to some like a very tough draw, but when you take a quick look at our results this season, an away tie is possibly the best chance we have of progressing to the semi-finals. Just two home wins all campaign doesn't suggest that 'there is no place like home' for the Latics. In fact we have already played two cup games at the DW Stadium, Bradford in the Capital One cup and Bournemouth in the FA cup, both ended in draws after 90 minutes, the Bradford game was settled on penalties in favour of the West Yorkshire side, whilst Bournemouth went to a replay, which we won.
On our travels in the cups we have won at Nottingham Forest, West Ham, Bournemouth, Macclesfield and Huddersfield, add to this league victories at Southampton, Spurs, Aston Villa and Reading, then you see that an away tie isn't the drama that it appears at first glance, there is also the sense that Everton appear a little over confident
Pre the Reading game at the Madejski Stadium last month, there was much talk coming out of Berkshire of how they were going to put some distance between themselves and us in the league, at the time I felt they were too complacent and we stung them, now I sense a similar vibe making its way down the East Lanc's Rd from Goodison Park, all the talk of winning the cup for Fellini or Moyes or whoever appears to have overlooked good old Wigan Athletic and, in my humble opinion, we will catch them tomorrow
Changes or not I trust Roberto Martinez to field a side that is capable of winning the tie, we are in a dog fight at the wrong end of the table, but the importance of what a morale boosting win would do for the club isn't lost on our gaffer, I sense a little piece of history in the making and a first ever FA cup semi-final appearance is on the horizon for Wigan Athletic following another away day delight
