Latics Boss - The Candidates - Poyet And Robinson

Latics Boss - The Candidates - Poyet And Robinson

Dave Whelan is back in Gods land following his trip south these past few days, now his focus will be firmly on the candidates list for the vacant managers post at the Latics, with speculation mounting as to whom will be moving into the hot seat at the DW Stadium, I thought it might be a good time to once again refresh ourselves with some of those in line and their chances of becoming our next boss

Over the next couple of days we'll take a look at some of the front runners, for now we'll start with two managers that are currently employed but still high in the betting, Poyet and Robinson:

Gus Poyet

It's difficult to know what are the chances of his coming to Latics despite having fairly short odds with the bookies.

Firstly, despite being suspended by Brighton for alleged breach of contract, he's still under contract. Unless they sack him pretty soon then we would need to buy him out of his contract.

Secondly, unless he's risking further allegations for breach of contract, he's unlikely to be one of the people who have applied for the job. It's fairly safe to assume that the applications have come from out-of-work managers and others not currently in management posts. If those applications are as good as Uncle Dave says, then the £1.5m he's got for Bob would be better spent in the transfer market or put towards the wage bill rather than buying someone out of their contract.

Would he be any good anyway? He's certainly got a good C.V. with a great pedigree as an assistant and as a coach and in nearly three years at Brighton, he's taken them from the bottom of League One to nearly the top of the Championship, and all that allegedly with a wage bill in the bottom half of the Championship. His style of football is one that would fit well with us. However, he seems to have taken his ball home with Brighton, refusing to draw up the retained list at the end of the season and allegedly having been uncommunicative since he turned down the Reading job in March. He feels he's taken Brighton as far as they can without a major cash input and now seems to want a Premier League job. In short, we are perhaps unlikely to fit the bill.

Would I want him? Yes. He would probably be my favourite from all those mentioned but if you were planning to have a flutter on Gus being our next manager, as I was, my advice would be to save your money for a punt on Latics being promoted back to the Premier League next year - the chances are probably greater.

Karl Robinson

Another manager already in a job, but Robinson is being highly tipped in some quarters as the man most likely to win the race. From complete outsider to one of the forerunners in the eyes of the bookies, the MK Dons manager is a bit of a dark horse

With absolutely no pedigree on the playing side, his senior clubs include Warrington Town, St Helens Town, Marine and Bamber Bridge, but the 32 year old is very highly regarded on the coaching circles and three years ago he became the youngest ever person to achieve the UEFA Pro Licence at just 29

Robinson recently turned down the chance to take over at Sheffield United stating that he wanted to finish his project of attaining Championship football for MK Dons, a feat he nearly managed this season guiding them to the League One play-off semi-finals

He is known for having his team play a good brand of football, not rushing his players to make mistakes but rather focus on possession and create openings through patient build up, all sounds rather familiar

Personally I think Robinson will pose too great a risk for Dave Whelan, he is just too much of an unknown plus we'd have to pay compensation, an outsider but unlikely

ALthough Karl Robinson is very well regarded I just feel that his lack of experience is too much of a risk this season with whats at stake
