Latics Boss - The Candidates - Powell And Phelan

Dave Whelan is back in Gods land following his trip south and he is now actively interviewing the candidates for the vacant managers post at the Latics, with speculation mounting as to whom will be moving into the hot seat at the DW Stadium, I thought it might be a good time to once again refresh ourselves with some of those in line and their chances of becoming our next boss

Over the next couple of days we'll take a look at some of the front runners, Rene Meulensteen , Gus Poyet, Karl Robinson, Steve McClaren and Owen Coyle have already been under the spotlight, now it's the turn of Chris Powell and Mike Phelan:

Chris Powell

The 43 year old Charlton Athletic manager had a good playing career which started at Crystal Palace, but it was Charlton where the left back really made his name making nearly 250 appearances for the Addicks and gaining five England caps

Powell got his first chance at management with Charlton, being appointed in January 2011, in his first full season in charge Charlton won the League 1 title and were promoted to the Championship, they'd been in top spot since September and finished the season with 101 points, just five defeats and 36 goals conceded was impressive to say the least.

2012/13 Charlton ended the season 9th in the Championship, 3 points off a play-off spot. Chris Powell has gone about managing Charlton in a quiet yet efficient manner, working with one of the smallest budgets in the Championship, the only real blip in the season was a three match losing streak in December, but they picked up and finished on a seven match unbeaten run

Highly rated coach and all round good guy, an outsider maybe, but one with a good shout

Mike Phelan

The former Manchester United assistant manager has been a front runner in the race to become Latics boss since it was announced that Martinez was leaving

The 50 year olds playing career saw him turn out for home town club Burnley, then onto Norwich, Manchester United and finally West Brom, he has one England cap.

Phelan has been on the first team coaching staff at United since 2001 and he became assistant manager to Alex Ferguson in 2008. He has the pedigree of 12 years working as a coach/assistant manager at the top English club and undoubtedly would be respected by the players at the Latics, whether he has the qualities to move from coach to manager is open to debate and it would be a risk, but again so would any appointment

Not my first choice but I wouldn't be disappointed either if he was the man to get the job
