A bad day at the office yesterday for Owen Coyle and his men as they succumbed to a Lewis Grabban goal right on the stroke of half time at Dean Court, Bournemouth ran out winners in a game that at one point threatened to spill over with Callum McManaman receiving a red card for a rash challenge
After the game both bosses spoke to the press, let's take a look at what they said:
Latics boss Owen Coyle -
'I thought there were a number of factors that contrived against us on the day, but I also feel that we're capable of playing much better.
'Having said that we controlled the game for long periods, had a few fleeting breakaways to deal with from Bournemouth, but ultimately did enough to deserve some reward from the afternoon.
'Obviously the goal we conceded was very disappointing, having not had too much to worry about in front of our own goal. But I was very happy with the reaction in the second half, coming out and looking like the team who were going to win the match.'
'Some of the refereeing decisions were beyond belief and didn`t help our cause but somedays they go for you and other days they don't.
'But again we showed great resilience and pushed forward to try and score an equaliser, and seeing a Leon Barnett header cleared off the line, so I take much confidence from that.
'Days like this happen and I`ve been in football long enough to know when you`re beaten fair and square you hold your hands up and take it, but we weren't the second best team today.'
Coyle on the McManaman incident - 'I thought Callum McManaman was unfortunate to be sent off.
'The incident happened in close proximity to the linesman and he didn't indicate a foul at the time. Callum has won the ball, but his momentum has taken him into the opposition player, but it certainly isn't a red card in my opinion.'
Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe -
'It was a very difficult game and you only have to look at the strength of their bench to see how strong they will be this season.
'So, to win and win well, even though it was at home, is a real credit to the players because our goalkeeper wasn't really tested.
'I'm really pleased with the lads tonight and it has been a good start to the season.
'The game had a bit of everything; a penalty, a sending off and two good teams going at it.
'But I'm really pleased with the clean sheet because it was a great response and a mental test for lads, and they came through it.'
Howe on the McManaman incident - 'I thought it was a high tackle and my initial thought was that it could be red, which it turned out to be'
'We all want to protect our players and get the majority of decisions, so I understand their frustrations. But, from my point of view, it was a red card.'
