'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Gary Caldwell Assesses The Season So Far

Wigan Athletic club skipper Gary Caldwell is battling his way back to fitness following a lengthy lay-off after undergoing hip surgery, during his rehabilitation the Scotland international has had the opportunity to assess how the Latics are adjusting to life in the Championship

A new manager and backroom staff, 12 new players joining the squad with just as many going in the opposite direction, a drop down in divisions and European football to contend with, some may feel that Caldwell is being a bit harsh when he say's 'we want to be doing better', but his appraisal is a honest one and it is only natural that professionals should strive to achieve the maximum

Latics sit 10th in the Championship, though they are just two points off a play-off spot and do have a game in hand on all those above, but the 31 year old centre back says that playing 'Thursday and Sunday` is 'difficult to deal with' and although you sense that there is caution in his words he does say that 'we've dealt with it well so far', always a natural leader both on and off the pitch Caldwell must be itching to get back amongst it and it is nice to hear his thoughts on the season so far

Speaking to the clubs official website Caldwell said - 'Everyone at the club would agree that we want to be doing better though.

'We're a pretty honest group of players and staff who can see that we can improve, but we also appreciate that the first months of the season would always be a big challenge.

'Thursday and Sunday fixtures are difficult to deal with no matter who you are and we've dealt with it well so far.'

How long before the skipper is ready for action? Caldwell himself says that he is hopeful of making an appearance for the reserves before the end of the year, he says - 'I've been out working on the grass for a couple of weeks now, but it's been light work and now I'm building towards getting a bit more involved.

'Once I get myself back with the group the hard work continues and I'll be getting back up to speed with everyone, playing in some reserve games and fighting to get back to full fitness.

'I'm really looking forward to training with everyone again, and I'd say it's likely that I'll be available to play at least reserve football by the end of this year.'

Good news and it'll be good to see him back involved.
