Phelan For Whelan Or Olly All The Way?

As the speculation mounts over who will pick up the reins at the Latics following the departure of Owen Coyle, the bookies have ear marked two candidates as firm favourites, former Manchester United assistant boss Mike Phelan and Ian Holloway who recently left Crystal Palace after guiding them to the Premier League last season

The gossip columns and rumour mills are starting to get warmed up and Mike Phelan appears to be the number one candidate, he was heavily linked previously with the DW hotseat, but of course last time out he wasn't successful, there isn't any evidence that Phelan was even interviewed, but when did a lack of evidence get in the way of some good gossip

Some outlets are claiming that Phelan could be given the nod as early as this weekend, though Whelan says 'It will be a case of seeing who applies and taking it from there, nothing is prejudged, we'll have interviews and take it from there', so perhaps not as cut and dried as some think

Ian Holloway threw his hat into the ring on Tuesday evening, working as a studio pundit for BT Sports he was asked if he'd fancy taking the Latics job, Holloway replied - 'Of course I'm interested. But are they interested in me?

'Who am I to sit here and say certain things? Obviously the way they play football, the way they try and pass it and the way their players are [is attractive].

'But unfortunately it's not my decision. I'd probably give it to me, but it's not my choice.'

A video of Ian Holloway talking about his new found love of the Latics this evening can be found by clicking here

Another candidate being touted about is Celtic boss Neil Lennon, this sounds more like pie in the sky, though he is being rumoured as wanting a move south of the border, we'll see

The latest betting at the bookies has Mike Phelan at 8/13 and Ian Holloway 2/1, no doubt those odds will change before the end of the day
