Any Previous? - City v Latics - You Bet There Is

The Latics face Manchester City on Sunday in the FA cup quarter-final at the Etihad Stadium, it is almost impossible not to conjure up memories of what happened on the 11th May in what was possibly the proudest day in our clubs history.

The FA cup final was a fantastic occasion and has led to a brilliant season representing England in the Europa League and defending our position as FA Cup Champions with honour and pride. Back on the 11th May, Ben Watson headed home in the 90th minute to give us our win and break City hearts, unfortunately Watson will not be in the team on Sunday having recently suffered a double leg fracture.

Wigan Athletic and Manchester City have met 27 times in all competitions, the first encounter coming in January 1971 when, as a non-league side, the Latics travelled to Maine Road to face a City side bristling with internationals in the 3rd round of the FA cup. A split boot, sliced goal kick and Colin Bell special conspired to see City beat the Latics 1-0.

In the meetings that followed City have had the better of things, though for a while we had the advantage in the Premier League with just one defeat in nine games.

The complete record is:

Latics 7 wins, City 15, draws 5
