Rob Kiernan Excited By New Contract

Latics have announced that 23 year old centre back Rob Kiernan has committed his future to the club by signing a new three year contract.

Signed from Watford in the summer of 2011, on the recommendations of Matt Jackson, Kiernan has taken his time forcing his way into the first team picture, former Latics manager Owen Coyle allowed the Republic of Ireland Under 21 international to go out on loan in the autumn where he made 13 appearances for League 2 side Southend United, he was also allowed to play in the FA cup suggesting that he wasn't in Coyle's plans for the Latics and with his contract due to expire this summer it looked likely that he would be on his way.

Uwe Rösler had different ideas though, having worked with Kiernan the previous season during a loan stint at Brentford Rösler knew all about his qualities and had no hesitation in not only recalling him from his loan spell, but throwing him in for his senior debut against Burnley at the DW Stadium in December, a solid performance saw the Latics play out a 0-0 draw against the divisions most potent attack.

Kiernan went on to make 13 appearances for the Latics in the run in, including playing in both playoff games against QPR, he also scored his first goal for the club in the 2-2 draw with Leicester, a thumping header.

Speaking about Kiernan Latics boss Uwe Rösler says - 'He earned his chance with us and was very consistent when he came into the team. His performances were a major positive in the second half of the season.

'I am delighted to be able to keep working with him now, exactly the kind of player we want to bring into the squad and become part of the backbone of the team in the future.'

Whilst Kiernan himself says - 'The gaffer has been brilliant to me, he gave me my big chance and now I'm looking to repay his faith in me with some big performances next season.

'I'm looking to build on last season and I'll work hard to be one of the names on the team sheet every week, to be trusted with a role in the team and to represent the Club as best as I can.'

Latics v Brentford - Big Game Preview

Latics go into the game against Brentford hoping to build on the win away at Burton last Saturday, another three points this afternoon could see us lifted out of the bottom three come 5pm, what a change around that would be from the despair that we were all feeling as we came in to the new year.

The truth of the matter is that the team is too good to be stuck where it is in the league, we have enough quality in the ranks to be higher up the table, hopefully the last two games have shown t
