With nothing more than international friendlies and the odd transfer rumour to keep the boredom at bay, I thought I would do a little scouting to help feed my appetite for some Latics chat.
Undoubtedly our Achilles heel last season was the 'missing' goalscoring striker. Signing players from English clubs will cost a small fortune, so I cast my scouting net a little further, and with the help of Vital member russialatic, we could have unearthed a gem.
Yannik Boli is a French born Ivory Coast player currently plying his trade in war torn Ukraine at Premier League club FC Zarya Lugansk, Boli is the nephew of former Lens striker Roger Boli.
At 26 Boli is in the prime of his career, he is a pacey, direct striker, with an eye for goal, an excellent touch and bags of energy. The one cap international joined Zarya Luganski in February 2013 for the modest fee of €300,000, so is well within our budget, he has a record of a goal every two games, finishing the season as the 7th top scorer in the Ukraine Premier League, he also leads the line very effectively.
Latics boss Uwe Rösler likes to press from the front and be able to counter attack at pace, Boli would offer both of these traits. A France national, Boli wouldn't be subject to a work permit and he has already been to England when he was nearly signed by Blackpool in 2009 following a trial period, but instead opted for Bulgarian club Chernomorets Burgas.
A collage of Boli's performances for FC Zarya Luganski is well worth a view.
If you have any scouting reports of players who may be of interest to the Latics please get in touch at email@example.com and we will publish for you.
