Southport Announce Latics Friendly

Conference Premier League club Southport have announced via their official website that they will play the Latics in a preseason warm up game on Wednesday July 16th.

There is no indication whether it will be the first team squad or the Development side that will be travelling to Haig Avenue.

The Latics of course replaced the Sandgrounders in the Football League in 1978, they are currently managed by ex-player John Coleman who enjoyed enormous success as boss of Accrington Stanley where he had a 12 year stint taking them from the lower echelons of non-league football to the glory of promotion to the Football League. Coleman has been in charge since December and it is hoped that he can reciprocate the success he had in East Lancashire on the West Lanc's coast.

The Latics will undoubtedly take a sizeable following to the Southport game, just 25 minutes by car, as the fans will be ready to whet their appetite for the new season which is already carrying high expectations.

Check out the latest PWU podcast, this edition is a World Cup preview special, in the studio at the Beech Hill Book Cycle are Barry, Gareth, Mick, Dan and Paul discuss the chances of each country involved.

Brazil is the destination for the world's best footballers, Latics fans have interest not only because England have qualified , but we also have current and past players featuring for various sides in the tournament, Honduras featuring the most with Espinoza, Garcia, Palacios and Figueroa.

We look at each group and pick our tournament favourites, hopefully one of us has picked the winner!
