Mike Pollitt Moves To The Coaching Staff




The Latics have announced that Mike Pollitt will be the first team goalkeeping coach following the departure from the club of Phil Hughes.

Polly's playing contract expires next week and he will now concentrate on coaching

Big Mike was the first signing the club made following our promotion to the Premier League back in 2005, joining from Rotherham United for £250,000 in July of that year and he put in some memorable performances in the coming seasons, none more so that the Carling Cup semi-final second leg away at Highbury against Arsenal, he saved a Robin van Persie penalty that night to ensure the Latics progressed through to our first ever major cup final.

Speaking about his new coaching role Pollitt told Latics Official website - 'I had offers to keep playing, but really to have an opportunity to begin my coaching career at a top Championship club, working with international goalkeepers, was too good a chance to miss and I'm delighted that the gaffer has shown such faith in me.

'It's going to be a bit strange at first, changing in a different dressing room and having to coach former team mates, but it's something I will have to get used to quickly, having MP on my top rather than the Number 12!

'This is the next stage of my career and I am fortunate to be given the chance.'


Uwe Rösler appears quite enthused about Polly's move to the coaching team, he told the clubs website - 'Mike has been a top goalkeeper with huge experience in the game and I think he will be a great coach.

'We talk about giving young players a chance and it should be the same for young coaches. Mike is a real student of the game and has absorbed so many ideas from the people he has worked with over the years and has some fantastic experience which he will now be able to pass on.

'He is a big character around the place, infectious, and I felt it was the perfect opportunity for him to join our coaching staff and for us to take a new direction.'
