The 12th Man - I've Just No Energy
This weeks Wigan Evening Post 12th Man feature has one contribution from Vital Latics:
Lack Of Energy
What a disappointment that was!
The anticipation of waiting for the season to start was almost unbearable, then two games in the space of four days would surely quell the nervous tension, especially with the opening league encounter being at home and the second game at a League 2 club.
Bang. The performance against Reading, in both halves, was a shocker, the second half especially so, we hardly strung more than two passes together all game, in the second half we had to wait until the 91st minute to get into the Reading penalty box, the 91st minute, a full half without encroaching the opposition area, at home, so much for our high pressing game.
We certainly got out of jail when James McArthur latched onto the flick on from Emyr Huws' punt from the half way line to nod home the equaliser, by that stage we could easily have been 3 goals down.
Onto Tuesday and Burton, ten changes to the starting eleven but still a distinct lack of penetration, going out of the Capital One cup isn't the end of the world, indeed many would say it is a blessing in disguise, but it is the manner of the performance that is the big worry.Looking at both games you'd have to ask what have we been doing preseason? The players played like they'd never met before, totally disjointed, alright there were debuts on Saturday, but only four and three of those have had a full preseason with us, the pick of the bunch, Emyr Huws has been at the club the shortest time.
Maybe the cancellation of the second game during our Germany preseason training camp spoke volumes, many thought it was a strange decision at the time, looking at the weary, leggy performances of the past week fills you with wonder if they have been pushed too hard in preseason, two very tired performances suggests overtraining.
I was expecting a high energy game, especially with all the talk coming out of the camp about pressing high, dominating territory and raining shots on goal, but such lacklustre performances and the complete change of team for the midweek game indicates that there are a lot of our players that are in need of rest and recovery, and we are just one league game in!
One league game in, a long way to go yet, hopefully it is just a matter of fine tuning and we can get on track at Charlton on Saturday and then Cardiff on Tuesday, four points from these two games would be a fantastic return and put the optimism back in me, I feel we have a good season ahead, but the sooner we start to play like we know we can the sooner I will feel better about my promotion prediction.
