Any Previous? - Latics v Aston Villa

Over the years the Latics and Villa have met 20 times, Latics have 5 wins, Villa 9 and there have been 6 draws.

My abiding memory of Latics clashes with Villa is the very first meeting between the two clubs in the League Cup 4th round, a cold but clear Tuesday night on the 1st December, 1981, was it really 35 and a bit years ago?

The game finished 2-1 to Villa, Latics had led 1-0 at half time through a great Peter Houghton goal, but goals from Peter Withe and a hotly disputed Gary Shaw penalty saw the Villa go through, a fantastic performance though from a very talented Latics side that stretched the English Champions and soon to be European Champions all the way.

The last time we met at the DW Stadium was on our final day as a Premier League side back in 2013, the blow of relegation was somewhat softened though by the fact that we had won the FA Cup seven days before.

Saturday's game is of course a massive one in the context of defining our season, of the five wins we have recorded against Villa, just one has come on our home patch, let's make it two.
