Meet The Ref - Latics v Cardiff City - Oliver Langford




Latics are in action on Saturday when Cardiff City visit the DW Stadium. Taking charge of his seventh Wigan Athletic game will be West Midlands based official Oliver Langford.

It may only be the 7th time little Ollie has been in charge of the Latics but it is the fourth time this campaign, he guest starred in our TV appearance against Preston North End back in September and incurred the wrath of then boss Gary Caldwell for not picking up on a foul on Shaun MacDonald in the build up to the only goal of the game. Both Dan Burn and David Perkins found their way into the book, Langford booking two players from either side.

He was also in charge of our one nil away win at Saturdays opponents Cardiff with interim boss Graham Barrow in charge, hmm, deja vu! No bookings at all that day. Langford was also in charge of our 3rd round FA cup victory over Nottingham Forest at the DW in January, four bookings - Power, Jacobs, Flores and MacDonald - plus two goals - Grigg and Wildschut - a rare victory under Warren Joyce.

Langford's first Latics game was back in December 2014 when Norwich visited the DW Stadium, we lost that game 1-0, he was also in charge of our visit to the City Ground in February 2015 when we faced this weekend's opponents Nottingham Forest, we lost that game too, 3-0, but not a single card was issued to either side by Langford in any of the games, he also only awarded 16 free kicks in the whole of the Norwich game, just five of which were against the Latics and in the Forest game there were just 10 free kicks, the Latics conceding six, obviously not a whistle happy ref!

Last season he took charge of our game at London Road when we travelled south, a long way south, on a Tuesday evening to face Peterborough, we won that game 2-3 with a late Max Power strike and picked up just one booking, Chris McCann for looking miserable, though he was a little livelier with the whistle that night.

Langford has been on the National List of referees since the 2008/09 season, he was fourth official when we met Bournemouth in an FA cup 3rd round replay down at Dean Court in January 2013 - erm wasn't that the year we went on to win the damn thing - always nice to get an opportunity to mention our FA cup win especially on cup day.
