Wigan's Promotion Clash Should Provide A Perfect Uplift

Wigan's Promotion Clash Should Provide A Perfect Uplift

Paul Cook says it`s like waiting for Christmas with the cup quarter final on the horizon in a few weeks` time. However, he also admitted that the team are still suffering a bit of a hangover from our exploits against Man City.

We scraped a win against rock bottom Rochdale last week, and although the postponement mid-week does mean we`ll have a rested squad heading in to the crunch match against Blackburn, we need to ensure we step up our performance on Sunday.

Hopefully, we should see everyone 100% focused on our promotion chances, rather than having one eye on the Southampton game. It is a cliche to say it is a six pointer but due to all the cup ties and re-arranged games, we have slipped six points off the top, and we need to cut the gap as soon as possible.

Having points on the board is key heading into the last few months of the season, and while it is all well and good saying we have games in hand, that only counts if we take advantage of them and pick up important wins.

When our manager says it`s "hard to switch off" from our exploits in the cup, you do get slightly worried that we`ll take our eye off the ball in the league. However, we have three massive games before the Saints come to visit, and they are all against teams in the top ten.

If we are distracted we could find ourselves with a lot of work to do to secure an automatic promotion place, and so the Rovers match should provide the team with a huge amount of motivation.

The manager should be emphasising that if we get a win at the weekend, and continue playing well in the next few weeks, we will be heading into the Cup clash high on confidence. Keeping our heads is crucial, and if we do manage to keep our focus, we have a great opportunity of both making great strides towards promotion, as well as giving ourselves the best chance of securing a trip to Wembley.
