Latics scrape win against Magpies

Travelling Newcastle were almost in the lead first as Sibierski got brought down inside the box by Ryan Taylor.

However Noberto Solano couldn't convert it as John Filan saved it.

Right before half time Ryan Taylor managed to recover from what he did earlier in the game by whipping a free kick past Shay Given to score his first ever Premiership Goal just 5 minutes from half time.

Newcastle's attacking gameplay was unfolded as the team which had the better of the game in the first half came back out struggling to attack.

In the end Wigan just manage to hold on to scrape their victory in a game which could have gone the other way but Obafemi Martins couldn't do enough despite shining for Newcastle.

Late on Henri Camara had a chance as he almost looped the ball over given but the ball was pushed away.

Newcastle were the best team attacking in the first half with a good display all round but it was defeat that exposed Newcastle frailties.

Paul Jewell said in the post match, ''We can't do anything about other results, but if we win as many games as the bottom three, we'll be fine.'

Well done lads.A great result which puts you 10 points clear of West Ham including goal difference.I expect you will jump a few more places before the end of the season and finish above the likes of Fulham and maybe Man City.A Shrimper..Remember us Southend United it wasn't that long ago we played you was it.Cheers

Congratulations Wigan, what a great rise to the top the club have had in a small space of time. I admire what has happened with the club and wish you well for the future. Whelan is OK by me also! I have nothing against Newcastle but after reading a section in the vital Newcastle match report I'm glad that you beat them and think the guy writting that was bang out of order! Good luck in your relegation fight think you'll be OK, Charlton are the team you should worry about but six point and a better goal difference should be enough.
