What It Means to Love The Latics

What It Means to Love The Latics

I`ve supported this team of mine, yes they are mine, for many, many years, yes I know they are yours as well.

That`s it with your team, they are yours and you become selfish.

You want them for yourself, yet you want to share them with anybody who`ll join in with your crazed life. It`s weird.

Any ways, as I`m quite old, I`ve been a supporter for a long time, but I remember my first match as though it was yesterday.
Saturday 20th November 1971 Wigan Athletic versus Halifax Town in the F.A. Cup!

It was a bitterly cold day and there was snow.

I went to the game with my best school mate Howard Speakman, he lived round the corner from Springfield Park, in Wall Street.

Graham Oates scored direct from a corner and Latics won 2-1.

That was it; I was hooked, utterly and completely. I was besotted.

In the early days life was good.

Supporting a non-league side was novel, especially with all the big, glamorous clubs round about, oh and of course there was the Rugby.

None of these were of interest, I`d met my childhood sweetheart and we were going through adolescence together, until one day my sweetheart bloomed into a fully fledged league club.

That was like getting married.

The joy of the honeymoon in that first season was superb.

Over the years I have taken a lot of stick for being a Latics mon, but I`ve always defended my first love.

I never in my wildest dreams thought we`d play in the top division.

I enjoyed visits to Lancaster, Leek and Stafford, Scunthorpe, Luton and Rochdale, but this is the dream.

This is where all clubs strive to be.

I have shed tears, happy and sad, loving my club.

They are in my blood, in my heart and they possess my every waking thought.

That`s what it means to me to love the Latics.

Please don`t leave me broken hearted on May 13th.

Say goodbye to the dream and enjoy the nightmare boys. Lets face it West Ham are a far better football club to have in the Pl than your shower.

Latics v Latics - Big Game Preview

The new pitch has been laid, marked and hovered in time for the visit of Oldham Athletic in what could be a very significant League 1 clash.

If results go our way, come 5pm tonight we could find ourselves in second spot in the league table, a position that would set us up nicely for next week's clash with promotion rivals Walsall, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

The last time I was thinking like this with full on confidence was prior to the Blackpool game in December, what a
