'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Keep The Game Honest

This is a strange day.

We live in a country where integrity is regarded as an important part of life.

Honesty, a sense of fair play are attributes that are encouraged, yet today, Sunday 13th May 2007, there is a strong swell of feeling from many people across the country that integrity should be ignored.

There are lots of suggestions that a football match should be, not exactly fixed, but not exactly played out to the full either.

You know the scenario, keep the score at nil - nil till half-time and if West Ham are losing at Old Trafford, well take the inevitable action.

I have read, this week, suggestions from the country`s top sports journalists that this would be justice.

There have been rallying cries from fans of clubs from all over the country and at different levels for this scenario to play out.

Having been a supporter of my club for the past four decades I for one don`t want a fix, a 'we know the result' display.

I may be a bit naive, but why should both ourselves and Sheffield United fall to the depths of deviancy that one club already has?

If the 'right result` does occur today, then there will be suspicion abound, the only way for this to be unfounded will be for a high intensity football match that its obvious there are two sides going all out to win.

I hope and I pray that the Latics will still be in the Premiership come 5 o`clock today, I also hope that West Ham will be relegated, but not if there are any signs of wrong doing.

Wigan Athletic and Sheffield United have always been good family clubs who have always tried to play good honest football, these traits have been built up over years; let`s not lose them today for the sake of some misguided justice.

I pray for a victory today, one where football on the pitch wins and not one behind the door of the directors box.

I really hope that you beat Sheffield United today so that West Ham can go down. Good luck.

Agree with those sentiments. Latics to say up without any skuldggery is the option most of football wants!
