Goal Of The Season

Goal Of The Season

Denny Landzaat`s wonder strike at the Emirates is in line for the BBC`s Match of the Day goal of the season.

The controversial match, which Latics eventually lost 2-1, is best remembered for Paul Jewells confrontation with the match referee Phil Dowd at the final whistle.

This was a game where refereeing decisions went against the Latics, but the one thing that Dowd couldn`t deny Jewells men that day was the sensational goal from Dutch Maestro Landzaat.

Sunday 11th February 2007, United Emirates Stadium, London, 4-27 pm.

Julius Aghahowa chases a ball into the corner of the Arsenal half, gets it under control, turns, plays the ball into the penalty area.

Arsenal defenders under pressure from Latics forwards scramble the ball out of the area into the midfield.

Denny Landzaat, Dutch international and Latics midfielder, picks up the lose ball 35 yards out and slightly to the right.

Landzaat pulls back his right foot and strikes the ball perfectly.

Silence hushes around the Emirates as the ball flies through the air.

Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann flings himself to his right, but the ball is already past him.

The ball hits the back of the net; the silence is broken by Latics fans erupting into cheers and a ripple of applause from the Arsenal faithful having witnessed a truly spectacular goal.

Was Landzaat`s strike the goal of the season?

For me this was definately the best Latics goal of the season, it was the first goal in a game that the Latics shouldve gone on to win. But is it the Prem goal of the season, well thats for you to decide.
