Valencia and Ecuador lose to Mexico

Latics midfielder Antonio Valencia played for his country in the Copa America against Mexico last night.

Unfortunately for Valencia the result did not go the way of Ecuador with Mexico winning 2-1

Valencia played the full 90 minutes and looked dangerous when on the ball, and could have scored early on in the game when well placed at the far post, only for a Mexican defender to divert the ball away from him.

Mexico went ahead after 21 mins when Marquez surged forward from defence and played a superb ball for Castillo who rounded the keeper and fired into an empty net.

As the game wore on Ecuador pushed forward looking for an equaliser and got caught on the break, Omar heading in following a right wing cross on 80 mins to put Mexico 2-0 up.

Ecuador managed to pull a goal back on 85 mins, midfielder Edison Mendez striking home from just outside the box but it was too late as the Mexicans ran out 2-1 winners

Ecuador now need to beat Brazil 2-0 in their final group game or they will be eliminated from the competition

Mexico have reached the quarter-finals
