Wigan Athletic Ask the Fan Pt 9

Wigan Athletic Ask the Fan Pt 9

As part of the run in to the new season Vital Wigan talks to the Latics fans

The ninth interview in the series is with Vital Wigan regular Latics Fan in Skem lets see what he says

1 - How long have you been following Latics and what got you started?

I first started watching way back when I was in school (197? - mid 70's anyway).

A friend from school asked if I wanted to go along with him, and that was it I was hooked. Until I discovered a girl (now my wife and a rugby fan - at least it was Wigan!!).

Then came work and several years away from the area in London and Germany.

2 - What is your most memorable moment as a Latics fan? Good or Bad.

Two really stand out, being on the pitch below the stand at Springfield Park when Wigan were finally elected to the football league, and the first year in the Premiership - my return as a supporter.

Seeing my team in 2nd in the Prem - on merit and because of the alphabet.

3 - Since you have been following Latics what would your Best Eleven be? And who is your all time favourite player?

A difficult one as there was such a big gap in my support. But
1. Kirkland ( fighting hard for his place against Bob Ward)
2. Taylor
3. Methven
4. De Zeeuw
5. Baines
6. Valencia
7. Skoko
8. Ward
9. Super Lee
10. Heskey
11. Houghton

Fav player?

I think purely for his work rate and determination it has to be Heskey at the moment.

He just seems more committed to proving himself and working for the team, and is more consistent.

4 - What would you say is the best goal you have seen Latics score?

Probably Baines's free kick. It even made it to the goal of the month competition on the Premiership website and I think the BBC too.

5 - Best away ground visited?

Not been to too many, with Wigan so the choice is between Highbury, Goodison, Stadium of light, Bramall Road, Bradford, Tranmere, Rochdale or Birmingham and Anfield but not watching Wigan.

Now I've listed them it has to be Sunderland.
.
6 - What are your expectations for the new season?

I'm hoping for a reasonable season. Mid table will do me fine.

Consolidate our place in the Premiership and maybe, just maybe, pundits will stop tipping us for the drop.

I would of course love Europe, though I probably wouldn't be able to get to the away matches, but more realistically that`s in the future.

7- Are you pleased with the new signings made so far and is there any other player you would have liked to have seen us sign (realistically)?.

I think the squad, if fully fit, is much stronger than I've seen before.

Lots of options in most areas.

Left back does seem week in numbers as does the left midfield but otherwise I happy with the signings.

I think a number of the new players will really shock their doubters.

8 - What are your thoughts on how last season ended and how did it compare to your expectations?

I was disappointed with the last few results.

We had a small but comfortable cushion between us and the drop zone and to throw that away over the space of maybe 5 games was shocking.

That final game though really showed the resolve of the team and their desire to keep the club in the Premiership.

9 -Despite the new signings, are there any areas in the side you think need adding to?

As I said earlier Left Back needs cover, both to increase competition and for cover for injuries.

Same applies to left wing midfield; Lee has left a huge hole to be filled.

10 - Where do you sit at JJB?

East Stand Block ES7 front row - my son is short sighted and needs to be at the front to see the players. We are just on the edge of the South end penalty area

Great team there Latics Fan in Skem, but which Ward is in midgield? We've had a couple in there other the years. Good to see Peter Houghton made your 11, boyhood hero of mine, once played in his kit for...well it's a long story
