Wigan Athletic Ask the Fan Pt 10

Wigan Athletic Ask the Fan Pt 10

As part of the run in to the new season Vital Wigan talks to the Latics fans

The ninth interview in the series is with Vital Wigan regular jerrysilverstone lets see what he says

1 - How long have you been following Latics and what got you started?

Growing up in Beech Hill in the 60`s, it was every little lads duty to sneak into Springfield Park across the John Fisher fields, and like most other Wiganers, I was sports daft, and watching the Latics was really a part of growing up. (as well as watching the rugby)!!

The first time I paid was I think Latics Vs City in the cup when Rod Marsh was playing and we won.

2 - What is your most memorable moment as a Latics fan? Good or Bad.

Watching grown men cry when Latics took to the pitch against Chelsea in our first Premiership game.

The atmosphere of absolute pride in 'our' club playing at the highest level was fantastic.

The muffled exclaimations of ' Who`d er thowt it' from old time Latics fans was brilliant.

3 - Since you have been following Latics what would your Best Eleven be? And who is your all time favourite player?

1. Kirkland
2. Chimbonda
3. Arry
4. De Vos
5. Baines
6. Valencia
7. Kav
8. Bullard
9. Super Lee
10. Roberts
11. Camera

Fav player?

Favourite.....Arry

4 - What would you say is the best goal you have seen Latics score?

Best goal...easy, the next one!! But seriously, Bainsey...twice! Maybe Ryan Taylor at the JJB, but probably Henri Camera against Sunderland ( I think it was Sunderland)

5 - Best away ground visited?

Best away ground , if it counts would have to be Millennium Stadium, Carling Cup Final...this would also count as best day out!!

Worst would be Blackpool last week...if we draw them away in the cup in January we`ll all get frost bite!!
.
6 - What are your expectations for the new season?

I think there is a big difference between expectations and hopes.

I expect that we will finish mid table after watching the pre-season games, I expect we will upset a lot of pundits who say we are for the drop, I expect a lot of people with be saying about the team and Hutch "I never expected that'.

I HOPE we do an awful lot better than this!!!

7- Are you pleased with the new signings made so far and is there any other player you would have liked to have seen us sign (realistically)?.

I am pleased and a little surprised at the quality of the signings we have made, and I am also delighted that Hutch is proving to be such a draw for these players, it bodes well. I am disappointed however with the level of the spending we can`t be at much more than break even...what about our 20 million!!

Realistically, from the people we have been linked with I would have liked to have seen Sami Hyypia, and Jagielka.

On the who would I buy given the chance and possibly realistic, Paul Scholes, Alan Smith, Benni McCarthy.

8 - What are your thoughts on how last season ended and how did it compare to your expectations?

To be honest, last season ended for me driving round the industrial estates in Skem coz I couldn`t watch the telly anymore.

I was driving pst the Delph pub in Orrell when the final whistle blew, I stopped the car , got out and ran round shouting!!

I suppose it was a sad end to the season all in all, we should never have been in that position.

We had good talent in the team but some of the displays were woeful, I think in hindsight, having almost a completely new team very few of whom had played in the Premiership or together was the problem and the lesson that we need to learn.

9 -Despite the new signings, are there any areas in the side you think need adding to?

We need a very good striker with high level experience.

We already have good lads, but we need to take a big step up in quality at the front. Obviously we need a left back!!

10 - Where do you sit at JJB?

I sit in the West Stand, WS4, where all the elderly Wigan statesmen sit, you know, the ones who help the ref with his decisions and point out the opposition team`s short-comings in fluent Wiganese!!

Latics v Brentford - Big Game Preview

Latics go into the game against Brentford hoping to build on the win away at Burton last Saturday, another three points this afternoon could see us lifted out of the bottom three come 5pm, what a change around that would be from the despair that we were all feeling as we came in to the new year.

The truth of the matter is that the team is too good to be stuck where it is in the league, we have enough quality in the ranks to be higher up the table, hopefully the last two games have shown t
