Wigan - Heskey Out for Weeks

During yesterday`s game at the JJB Wigan Athletic lost more than their 100% home Premier League record they lost their talisman and star player Emile Heskey

What ever today`s scan confirms regarding Heskey`s metatarsal yesterday confirmed Heskey`s presence on the pitch is vital to this season`s fortunes of the Latics

It is feared that Heskey broke his fifth metatarsal, the bone that runs to his little toe, he is already booked in to have an operation today, that`s how confident the club are that it is this injury.

It is the same injury that affected Wayne Rooney in the Euro 2004 championships in Portugal and he took 3 months to recover

Heskey could be missing until the Boxing Day home fixture against Newcastle and that is a twelve match run without him, 12 games is a long time in football, by Christmas I was expecting us to be safe, now I am not so sure.

Watching yesterday`s game against Fulham without Heskey, Landzaat and Valencia proved one thing without a shadow of a doubt, Wigan Athletic have a first eleven

That is it, there is no strength in depth

Latics boss Chris Hutchings has made some excellent signings this summer, but the clubs policy of one in and one out hardly improves the team when you start to suffer from suspensions and injuries

At the moment the Latics have a first team squad that contains 16 players that you would call Premiership players and four of them are injured (Heskey, Landzaat, Valencia and Taylor), add to that Kilbane`s suspension and you can see that the team is struggling for numbers

The first few games of the season promised so much but all Latics fans knew that a couple of injuries to key players and we would be in trouble

Lets just hope that come Christmas not too much damage has been done by the small size of our squad and we can ADD to the team in the January transfer window

Hopefully Heskey will prove top be a quick healer and get back in the team before too long, we need him to.
