Whelan sells Wigan

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan as severed his ties in Wigan Warriors Rugby League club by selling his shares to Harlequins chairman, Wigan born, Ian Lenagan

The deal will be completed on 1st December and will also see Maurice Lindsay leave the Warriors to be replaced by former Wigan player Joe Lydon

Now the goings on at the 'other` club in town is usually of no concern to me but rumours are afoot that they (Warriors) will have to find themselves a new ground to play on

Football ground

With Mr Whelan categorically stating that he has not got any intentions of selling the Latics and he is in it for the long haul, with European football the ultimate goal, how long will it be before the Warriors are evicted?

The JJB stadium was originally built as a football ground and the pitch laid as a football pitch because at the time of planning the Rugby team said they would sooner go and play at the Reebok in Horwich and share with Bolton than share with the Latics

Orrell

Over the past seven years the pitch has suffered dramatically due to the two sports being played there and Mr Whelan toyed with the idea of moving the rugby team out to Orrell and Edge Hall Road, which never came off

It is well known that Whelan has looked at the possibility of moving the Rugby to Pennington Flash to share with Leigh Centurions when the new sporting complex is built there

Sole Priority

The Latics will now be the sole priority at the JJB and with Whelan owning the stadium and acting as landlord to the Warriors I cant see him allowing the Rugby team to continue to damage the pitch the way they have over the past few years

I would not be surprised if come January the Wigan Warriors will be issued with an eviction notice and we will finally get the squatters out of our ground

Nice one Dave

Do you feel that Whelan selling the Warriors is good for the Latics?
