Nottingham Forest winger Chris Commons is once again being linked with a move to Wigan Athletic with several news outlets reporting that Chris Hutchings is ready to make a bid come January
Two questions need answering here
1. How many wingers do we need at the club?
2. Will Hutch still be in charge come January?
1. Chris Commons may be a good player at the level he`s at, indeed he is Forests leading goal scorer with 7 so far this season, but we already have a shed load of wingers:
Valencia, Koumas, Kilbane, Cotterill, Bouaouzan, Taylor and recently Mr Versatility Scharner
It is a quality forward that is required to play off Heskey (when hes back)
So lets leave Chris Commons where he is and secure the services of a forward
2. Will Hutch still be boss in January, well a lot depends on todays result at Birmingham, a defeat and I cant see Hutch being in charge next Saturday never mind January
But is Hutch in charge of signings any way?
It appears that General Manager John Benson has a very much hands on approach when it comes to negotiating with players and their agents when they are about to sign
So would it be too far to stretch the imagination to wonder if it is Mr. Benson who identifies the players to sign in the first place.
He had a similar role in the past at the Latics when previous managers were in charge, they were more like coaches to be honest, taking the training and taking the flack when things went wrong, managers such as:
John Deehan, Ray Mathias, Bruce Rioch, Colin Greenall and even Paul Jewell till Jewell got rid of him
I can see John Benson being handed the reins at the Latics if Hutch gets the shove from Whelan, which is very much on the cards following his comments this week, until a 'new` manager is brought in, who could well be an old mate of Whelan and Bensons, Steve Bruce
Bruce is no stranger to the Latics either having had a 6 week spell in charge before Jewell came on board
Also just this week Bruce has been saying how he thinks he`ll be out of a job at Birmingham come January when the new owners of the club take control.
Quite a few conveniences could play out in the next few weeks and if I was a betting man I would have a tenner on Steve Bruce being manager of Wigan Athletic come January 1st.
Are you with me on this one or is it too much of a conspiracy theory?
