Latics Speyk to Chelsea

Latics Speyk to Chelsea

Today Wigan Athletic entertain Chelsea at the JJB hoping to get something out of the game

In the run up to the game I managed to speak to Vital Chelsea editor merlin and asked him a few questions about Chelsea, the Latics and todays match, lets see what he had to say

How long have you been a Chelsea supporter merlin?

Nothing like starting with a personal question is there?

I suppose you could say I discovered the light in the early eighties, I`d left school and got bored with the home town thing, I needed something better, I needed to spread my wings and one Saturday I ventured into London and a lifelong passion was born.

Sorry, if I don`t fall into the glory-hunter backet though, I`ve seen my team in the lower league and, to be honest, enjoyed the experience.

Are you pleased with your start to the season?

Let`s just say it`s been eventful. Our ambition of wrestling the title back from Manchester United fell away early on although the dreams not entirely over but at least we`ve still got the Champions League to go for.

How's life under Avram Grant?

Slowly but surely it`s starting to take shape. After the loss to United in his first game we`ve won every other.

Not sure if its Grants influence or not, could be that we`ve got a stat-studded team who are determined to do it on the pitch. However, there are subtle changes in style, more players pushing forward (and quicker) when we have the ball.

Do you miss Jose?

Yes! Who wouldn`t?

Some of the life has gone out of the club, indeed, some of the life has gone out of the Premier League. Find me someone who doesn`t miss his legendary press conferences?

Are you happy with your summer signings?

In a word NO!

I have this suspicion that Jose`s tenure was hanging by a thread and no matter what the public face was, the club were never going to spend big.

Don`t believe the baloney about Chelsea never spending big! Roman will get his men in when the time is right!

Who should the Latics fans watch out for in the Chelsea team?

Frank Lampard!

I can`t believe there are idiots out there who boo him in an England shirt. Two years on the trot best England player (as voted for by the fans), the man is a legend.

What is the main prize for Chelsea this season?

After our indifferent start in the Premier League, I`d say the Champions League. Lady Luck must smile on us soon, three semi-final defeats in four years!

How do you feel the Latics will do this season, can we pull out of our current slump?

It`s a hard question, I feel Derby County are doomed and so many others are struggling to get a decent run of results. Spurs (ha ha!) are down there although I suspect they`ll climb clear and the likes of Fulham aren`t exactly classy.

It could be a case of you lot having to win games against the likes of Derby, Fulham, Sunderland etc to stay up. Whatever happens I wish you well.

If you had to pick one of the current Latics players to be in your squad who would it be and why?

Super Mario!

With Paulo Ferreira out injured for a month we could be back to the shenanigans of last season if Juliano Belletti gets injured.

Always like Mario, never quite achieved what he could have done though in his football career.

Who do you think will finish in the top 4 and bottom 3 this season?

Top four - perm any four from these five, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Blackburn! Relegation, Derby, Fulham and Reading!.

Prediction for Latics Vs Chelsea?

I`ve got to go for an away win, hopefully settled before the last minute this time!

Thanks for that merlin, good luck for the rest of the season, after today of course

Latics v Wolves - Big Game Preview

There is a little bit of pressure starting to mount down at the Latics, no win in seven games and sitting bottom of the pile, the sooner we can get a three points haul in the bag the better.

Gary Caldwell felt that his team were unlucky not to win the game at Preston on Friday never mind lose it, a wickedly deflected effort early on followed by some resolute defending kept the Latics at bay, but a failure to take two excellent chances was the downfall as we lost by the odd goal for the 7t
