Whelan leaves boss search to Benson

Paul Jewell today emerged has Dave Whelans number 1 choice in the search for a new manager at Wigan Athletic following the dismissal of Jewells close friend Chris Hutchings

It had been widely reported that a deal had been done with Graeme Souness but Mr Whelan claims that he hasn`t spoken to the former Liverpool manager for 3 years, last week Mr. Whelan claimed that he was right behind Chris Hutchings

Whelan said that he would be very interested to talk to Jewell about a return to the JJB and Jewell in reply states that he will listen to any offers though it is a bit embarrassing to talk about the Wigan job because of his friendship with Hutch.

Whelan is currently on holiday in Barbados and he`s left the search for the new manager in the hands of John Benson the clubs General Manager

Whelan told the BBC that he expects Benson to draw up a short-list of 3 or 4 candidates and they will carry out interviews in ten days time.

Who would you like to see on the short-list?
