Wigan Welcome Nigel

Nigel Spink became the new Wigan Athletic goalkeeping coach today following the departure of Gary Walsh who has teamed up with former Latics boss Paul Jewell at Derby

Spink, the former Aston Villa and West Brom keeper, follows his old boss Steve Bruce from Birmingham City to the JJB, its getting a little like a game of musical chairs.

Nigel Spink made his name whilst at Villa in the 1982 European Cup final against Bayern Munich, ten minutes into the game Villa keeper Jimmy Rimmer got injured and Spink came on and played a blinder as Villa beat the Germans 1-0 to lift the European Cup.

Nigel has been the goalkeeping coach at Birmingham for the past 6 years and joins Eric Black and Keith Bertschin in following their old boss to the JJB

Nigel told the clubs official web site that he was looking forward to working with three top class goalkeepers in Kirkland, Pollitt and Nash and he said that hed also been told that we had a couple of good young ones as well

Spink will bring a wealth of experience to the coaching staff and hopefully we can now push on and build on what Bruce has started
