Where have all our FA Cups gone?

Where have all our FA Cups gone?

There used to be famous cup teams, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Sheffield Wednesday, Spurs and even Portsmouth the longest holders of the cup.

Now it seems no one gives a hoot about the competition and all the sides with the great cup traditions are more concerned with league success

Wigan Athletics game against Sunderland tomorrow in the 3rd of THE Cup is likely to see two reserve teams (or very nearly) compete and it makes me feel sad and a little cheated

Maybe its the price of our success or maybe the Cup has lost some of its glamour (thanks Manchester United) but things aint what they used to be

I remember only four seasons ago getting very excited about the draw wondering who we were going to meet, now it seems most clubs don`t care if they go through or not.

The pressure of surviving in the different leagues taking precedence above all else, though I remember the FA Cup saving Alex Fergusons job at Old Trafford back in 1990

I also remember teams getting fined by the league for fielding weakened teams in league matches prior to cup finals, oh how times have changed

Perhaps the prize should be upgraded, maybe a Champions League spot as previously suggested by some commentators or a whopping great big cash prize, maybe £20 million, the FA can afford it.

Anything to get teams fielding their strongest line ups and getting some credibility back to the competition, the competition that was once declared the greatest Football Competition in the World

A cup run can lift a whole town never mind a club, lets put the magic back, please.

Remember how cup final appearances used to spawn so many spin-offs, the team song, the fans 'It`s a Knock-Out`, the TV show 'How the Cup was Won`

Lets bring back the magic lets have a cup run

It would do any club a great benefit to have a good run in the cup, financially and a good confidence booster

The only team outside the "big four" to win it since 1993 are Everton. I think the traditionalist still want to win it!!!

Thats the problem when the 'lesser' teams are fielding under strenth sides. How long have Chelsea been in the big four? They won the cup in 1997 and 2000 when you wouldnt have said they were part of the big four and when Everton won the cup they were part of the big four....complicated!

Teams like Arsenal and Man U are playing lots of games in the latter stages of other cup competitions. how can those players be expected to play in the FA cup as well? there is a physical limit to the number of games any player can play. But I dont think that means the FA cup is undervalued by the top clubs. they still dominate FA wins in recent years. No, the top teams are not to blame, but when smaller clubs decide to use their reserves you know there is a big problem. The 3rd, 4th and 5th rounds do not impact whatsoever on premier league games. the fixtures that follow them are a whole week away so tiredness cannot be an excuse. the attitude to this year' 3rd round from smaller clubs quite frankly stinks.

i think teams care less about the FA cup because the premier league is worth so much more money, all the same i would love to go on a good cup run

Spot on JimmyB. Even to lesser clubs (like mine, Pompey) money talks big time. It's a real downer on the fans as I think FAC 3rd round is still one of the biggest days of the season

The premiership is so big the cups are dwarfed by it.

Worbo - My Club Everton were relegation fighters in and around 1995 - Sure we are getting back to being a top 6 side but we were in an awful mess around then. The FA Cup win probably formed a Platform for Us to bring in Young Fans and Try to Compete Again. Best of Luck This Year Latics - Great Draw Last Week :-)
