Latics travel 15 miles down the East Lancashire Road this afternoon to face Manchester United at Old Trafford, seven previous visits seven defeats, 24 goals conceded and just a solitary penalty back in 2006 to show on the goals for column, are things about to change?
The Latics are in a rich vein of form at the moment, of the previous nine away games we have won seven, to continue this consistent run is absolutely vital if we are to come away from the game with anything, but with both Alcaraz and Beausejour major doubts through injury this will be a really tough encounter
United have injury concerns of their own, Rooney is out, both van Persia and Kagawa have been declared fit following knocks in the internationals, whether they`ll be risked though with the Champions League set to commence on Wednesday is another matter
Whatever teams are put out, it goes without saying that the Latics will have to be at their very best to get something out of this afternoons game, but I do believe we will be coming back down the East Lanc`s Road with some broad smiles, well I hope so
Latics boss Roberto Martinez:
'The last seven visits to Old Trafford have been a real uphill task for us; 24 goals conceded and one goal scored, from the penalty spot, tells its own story.
'It's important that we get ready for the event and the occasion because playing at Old Trafford can affect your play and we can't allow that to happen.
'The last time we played Manchester United showed that we can match them on our day and we need to make sure that together with the new players in the squad we're mentally strong to try and do the same again and be the best Wigan Athletic side that has travelled to Old Trafford.'
Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and Phil Jones are out, both Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa have been declared fit and Darren Fletcher returns to the squad.
United from - Lindegaard; Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Valencia, Cleverley, Scholes, Carrick, Kagawa; Nani, Welbeck, Hernandez, Van Persie, De Gea, Evans, Giggs, Powell, Fletcher.
He's really a Latic at heart and he is class
