West Ham v Latics Preview
Latics travel to East London this evening to face Sam Allardyce and his West Ham side in the Capital One cup 3rd round. A game that will undoubtedly be sprinkled with fringe players and youngsters from both clubs, both managers have said the game will be a chance for players trying to impress
We haven't had a decent cup run since getting to the Final of this competition back in February 2006, have we got this competition ear marked this season? I very much doubt it
What The Bosses Say:
Latics boss Roberto Martinez:
'We're desperate to get back on the pitch once more after the disappointment at the weekend against Fulham, and from that point of view the game comes at a good moment'
'The numbers in the squad are good enough to share the responsibility around, but the game will more importantly be a chance to get that competitive feel back into the group in a tough encounter.
'We understand the demands three games in one week brings and so it's a period where the full squad needs to be ready for and some of the lads who have been disappointed not to make the team lately will have the opportunity to make an impression on Tuesday night.'
'We're not looking for a cup run at the moment, we're focused on Tuesday's game with the intention of winning and looking to build on the momentum and competition the game will bring.
'That's really important for us at the moment because for whatever reason we're not performing as well as we can and this game will help to bring those levels of quality up in the group.
'That's where the priority lies, because a strong performance will have a good impact on the competition within the squad during this period and hopefully a positive result on the night.'
West Ham boss Sam Allaradyce
'There are players that are frustrated on our substitutes' bench. Obviously, Modibo Maiga will come into the fray
'He's come on as sub again and is still feeling his way in. Wigan's going to be a great game and there's not too much pressure on both teams, because it's the Capital One Cup.
'I'm sure they'll make seven or eight changes like they did against Nottingham Forest in the last round. We'll make some changes based on George McCartney, James Tomkins, Alou Diarra, Maiga, Gary O'Neil, Matt Jarvis. We've got loads of players who can play.'
West Ham United Team News:
Andy Carroll and Jack Collison are out through injury
Player to watch: Modibo Maiga
A player that the Latics were heavily linked with at the back end of last season
Wigan Athletic Team News:
Anolin Alcaraz and Franco Di Santo are out, expect quite a few changes from Saturday's starting eleven, Martinez is set to shuffle his pack
Player to watch: Callum McManaman
It would appear that McManaman is going to get the nod to start tonight, big chance for the youngster to shine
