Latics v Man U Preview

Wigan Athletic
vs.
Manchester United

DW Stadium

01/01/13

3pm

Latics entertain Manchester United this afternoon hoping to build upon the great result at Aston Villa last time out, a result that pulled us out of the bottom three

The return of Ivan Ramis made a massive difference, not only to the defence but also the whole team, he is such an important player for us

Today will more than likely be the last for Arouna Kone before he jets off to the ACN tournament, hopefully the Ivory Coast international can leave us with a big game and a goal to remember him by

This fixture will of course stir up special memories of that night back in April when a Shaun Maloney goal gave us a great win, we were in the middle of a fantastic run of results that pulled the club away from the threat of relegation. Another full on performance is required today if we are to get anything from the game

United will be hoping to keep their seven point gap at the top of the Premier League intact and it promises to be a really exciting game of football

What The Bosses Say:

Latics boss Roberto Martinez

'Obviously looking at the history, the stats are very bleak because it shows you we're playing one of the best teams in the world.

'But we're excited, we're looking forward to it.

'The result and performance against Aston Villa has given us a real sense of confidence in ourselves and this is an opportunity to show what we can do.'

Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs

'Wigan are a tough team to play against. They play with a different system to what we're used to and they play it well.

'I'm surprised they're down there considering the tough game they gave us last season and also this season at Old Trafford where they played well.

'It was tough when you consider our good record. It undoubtedly contributed to us losing the title.'
