Newcastle v Latics - Big Game Preview

Newcastle United
vs.
Wigan Athletic

St James' Park

01/04/17

3pm

A massive game for both clubs with so much at stake at the top and bottom ends of the Championship table. Are the nerves starting to get to Newcastle? No wins in three and no home win since the 20th February, in contrast the Latics have won three of the last six away days, every straw must be clutched at.

This will be an extremely tough game and there probably isn't a Latics supporter who wouldn't take a point if it was offered now.

April Fools Day today so here's hoping we can make mugs out of the Mags.

Up the tics!

What The Bosses Say:

Latics boss Graham Barrow:

''If you'd asked me a week ago how I felt about this game I'd probably have been quite on edge

''But the international break has helped me and my staff more than anybody because we've managed to do a lot of work and have got into the players a bit more.

''We're confident of putting in a good performance and hopefully that brings with it the result we're looking for.''

''They're (Newcastle) under as much pressure as us really but in a different way. Their supporters could become a bit anxious and that could reflect on how they play the game. We could make them quite nervous but that's got to be down to us really.

''We've always had good games against them. They've always had that attacking element about them ever since the Kevin Keegan days, and in fairness Rafael Benitez has done a good job there and they've got that attacking look about them still. They've got good footballers but it's up to us to stop them.''

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez:

''Concentration is firmly on Wigan, then it will switch to Burton Albion - and that's how it will continue right through until promotion is secured.

''We have eight games against eight teams and we have to be top of this 'mini league' we can't think about other games, just the first one.

''We all have to stick together with the fans and make sure we try to win the mini league.''

''I showed my friend some clips of Wigan, he doesn't know the team, he said: 'They might do this, or that.' My friend didn't realise the play good football too, it is not just about being strong physically.

''He was surprised.''

Newcastle United Team News:

Ciaran Clark, DeAndre Yedlin and Rolando Aarons are definitely out, both Daryl Murphy and Grant Hanley are rated doubtful, but Isaac Hayden is now available after 6 weeks out.

Newcastle possible - Darlow, Anita, Lascelles, Hanley, Dummett, Ritchie, Diame, Colback, Gouffran, Shelvey, Gayle

Player to watch: Dwight Gayle

Top scorer with 21 goals, definitely the danger man.

Wigan Athletic Team News:

Latics have been plagued by a catalogue of injuries all season, Andy Kellett joining the list following knee ligament damage against Villa.

Powell, Grigg, Daniels, James and Burke all missing.

Stephen Warnock should be fit to take his place back in the team.

Latics possible - Gilks, Connolly, Buxton, Morgan, Burn, Warnock, Power, MacDonald, Morsy, Jacobs, Bogle

Player to watch: Omar Bogle

It's time for Omar to find the goals again.
