Wigan Athletic went to the KC Stadium yesterday and left with Steve Bruces rendition of 'Thats the way I like it' ringing in their ears.
The Premier League new boys from Hull had started the season on fire, beating Fulham and drawing at Blackburn, but lets be honest those two sides arent exactly likely to be challenging for much this season.
Yesterday they fell to earth with a bump
The Latics were simply magnificent from start to finish and gave a thoroughly professional display that fully warranted the five - nil thrashing of the less than aptly named Tigers…growl, I think not.
Antonio Valencia was exquisite throughout and capped a man of the match performance with a fantastic solo goal early in the game.
The rout started after just 6 minutes when Latics were awarded a corner, Kevin Kilbane hit a poor one low and hard and low and behold it ended up in the back of the net.
Hull defender Rickets had left his post, Hull keeper Myhill had left his goal line and Killers corner squirmed over the line, 1-0 to the Latics.
The second goal came on 13 minutes, a Hull corner was superbly met by Boyce in the box, his towering header fell at the feet of Zaki, the Egyptian looked up and saw Valencia starting to make a run.
Zaki hit a beautiful defence splitting ball which Valencia was onto in a flash, he took one touch in his own half and then out sprinted FOUR Hull players before calmly slotting past the advancing Myhill, 2-0.
Latics had other chances in the 1st half and played some very good controlled football but they had to wait until the 63rd minute for the next goal.
A ball into the box fell at Zaki`s feet and he controlled in an instant before side footing past Myhill and 3-0.
Just before the goal Kilbane was elbowed in the face by a Hull player and suffered a depressed fracture of the cheekbone as a result, one for the video panel me thinks as the referee took no action.
On 68 minutes a punt down field skimmed off the head of Hull defender Brown, Heskey reacted quicker than his marker and was on the ball in a flash, Heskey rounded keeper Myhill and fired home for a good goal from a tight angle 4-0
One more to come and it was that man Zaki again, this time a cut back by Michael Brown found Zaki on the edge of the Hull box, the Egypt striker unleashed an unstoppable volley that crashed off the underside of the bar and with the assistant referee flagging that the ball had crossed the line 5-0 to the Wiganers, get in.
The Latics could have scored more towards the end, but that would have been unfair on Hull, 5-0 was more of a true reflection on the game…bring on Sunderland
By the way did anyone get to see the Sunshine band yesterday?
