Moses Strikes in Latics Win

Victor Moses scored a 70th minute goal to give Wigan Athletic victory over West Brom in a close game at the DW Stadium and get the Latics back to winning ways following a five game winless streak.

Roberto Martinez made just one change from Wednesday nights starting eleven bringing in Steve Gohouri following his one match suspension and dropping left back Maynor Figueroa down to the subs bench.

In the West Brom side was former Latics favourite Paul Scharner, who was given a warm reception for the home fans.

Wigan were the first to show and N`Zogbia linked up well with Rodallega but the Latics leading scorer got the ball caught under his feet and the chance was gone.

Latics dominated the early exchanges without really creating any clear cut chances or testing Baggies keeper Scott Carson.

On 17 minutes skipper Gary Caldwell suffered a thigh strain clearing a ball behind for a corner and he had to be replaced in the team by his brother Steven, though to be fair to Steven Caldwell the back line continued to look solid for the rest of the game. Without much goal mouth action the rest of the first half petered out.

Victor Moses was introduced at the start of the second half as a replacement for Jordi Gomez, Moses went wide right with Tom Cleverley moving inside, Moses made an immediate impact running at West Brom left back Nicky Shorey with pace and power and suddenly the game sprang to life.

Latics were now creating more chances and took control of the game, so it was no surprise when they went ahead with a great finish from Moses.

West Brom had been awarded a free kick which was charged down and played out to Charles N`Zogbia who carried the ball into the West Brom half, surrounded by three defenders N`Zogbia lost his footing and fell to the ground, but quick as a flash he was back on his feet and slipped the ball out to his right in the path of the oncoming Moses.

The young striker took the ball into the West Brom penalty box and hit a sweet right footed strike across Scott Carson into the far bottom corner, a great counter attacking goal, and a fantastic double back flip celebration from Moses.

Latics substitute Franco Di Santo had a chance to double the lead when he received a badly placed back pass, stood on the penalty spot completely unmarked Di Santo unfortunately put his effort the wrong side of the post.

Three points, a decent performance and climbing out of the bottom three, not a bad days work from the lads in blue.

Good game, always good though when we win

I concur. I got my prediction right as well. Top weekend! Do you think the BBC would consider me as a replacement for Mark Lawrenson?
