Newcastle 1-0 Latics

The Latics left Tyneside with nothing despite a much improved performance that saw Martinez`s side create a hatful of chances which, unfortunately they couldn`t convert, the only goal of the game coming in the 81st minute when Newcastle midfield man Yohan Cabaye hit a 20 yard strike into the back of the net leaving Al-Habsi with no chance.

An attacking formation with Rodallega, Crusat and Moses forming a front three gave Wigan a positive look which almost paid off straight from the kick off, Moses firing just wide, when Rodallega forced a good save from Newcastle keeper Krul on four minutes it looked like it would be just a matter of time before the away side would open the scoring.

Rodallega went close again on 15 minutes after being played in by the excellent Dave Jones, the Latics were playing with a pace and purpose that was missing in last weeks defeat to Bolton. Leon Best went closest for Newcastle in the first half forcing a fantastic save from Al-Habsi.

The second half was much the same as the first, an open game with both sides probing, with the match seemingly running to a draw Cabaye fired home following a knock down by Ben Arfa. The Latics responded well, Moses fired a glorious effort across the Newcastle six yard box, but both Rodallega and substitute Sammon were caught flat footed and missed the chance to poke home what would have been an open goal.

Momo Diame put a header wide when it looked easier to score with the goal at his mercy and that was the last chance of an entertaining game, a much better performance than of late by the Latics and the team looked a lot more balanced with Figueroa back in his usual position.

Much, much better, more of the same effort next week please

We need points though. 7 straight losses in the league will really set alarm bells ringing. I think at the same time good fortune and Latics are complete strangers.
