Latics made it two consecutive wins on the road as they beat West Brom 2-1 with a stunning Victor Moses goal and a Jordi Gomez penalty.
Martinez made just one change from the defeat against Arsenal, restoring Antolin Alcaraz to the defence following his three match ban for spitting, Steve Gohouri dropped down to the bench.
West Brom started the game with all guns blazing and Al-Habsi made a great save with just two minutes on the clock, but the Latics settled and slowly grew into the game with Diame, McCarthy and Gomez playing well in midfield, Moses and Sammon proving willing runners and chasing every ball it looked like a game that we could get something from.
Latics should have had a penalty on 20 minutes when Dave Jones produced a great run into the West Brom area but he was scythed down by a defender, a well placed Mike Dean waved play on.
On 33 minutes it was the home side though that took the lead, Caldwell was penalised for a pull on Odemwingie 30 yards out and dead central, up stepped Steven Reid and the former Blackburn player planted a great effort into the top right hand corner of Al-Habsi`s goal, 1-0.
Four minutes later the Latics were level, Victor Moses, who was superb all afternoon, played the ball to Momo Diame out on the left, the Senegal international crossed the ball into the box, Moses had made ground and hit a sublime effort from 18 yards into the top corner, 1-1.
The Latics finished the half looking the most likely to add to their goal tally and so it proved when Gomez knocked home a penalty on 56 minutes, Moses took on two West Brom defenders, skipped into the box, a quick change of direction left Reid making a clumsy challenge and taking Moses` feet from under him, this time Mike Dean pointed to the spot, up stepped Gomez to send Baggies keeper Ben Foster the wrong way, 1-2.
The Latics defence stayed resolute as West Brom went in search of an equaliser, Alcaraz left the pitch with a suspected broken rib on 67 minutes but it made little difference, some great defending saw the Baggies shut out, an outrageous dive that saw Dorrans booked for simulation did have the hearts in the mouth though late on, and ex-Latic Paul Scharner put a header wide with seconds remaining.
Overall a great away performance, full of effort and some great play, a well deserved victory that, for 24 hours, lifts the Latics out of the bottom three.
