West Ham 1-4 Latics

The Latics went through to the 4th round of the Capital One cup against West Ham with a scintillating performance and four well taken goals

Both sides made several changes to the starting eleven from the ones that took part in the Premier League last weekend, but there were still plenty of familiar names on the playing field

West Ham were in front inside 7 minutes, James McArthur inexplicably side footed a pass to former Latics target Modibo Maïga and the West Ham player made no mistake from 20 yards burying a fierce drive past Al Habsi

It was 1-1 after 14 minutes though when Mauro Boselli got on the end of a Maynor Figueroa cross, the Argentine striker producing a great finish from close range

On 38 minutes the Latics made it 1-2, Ivan Ramis showed West Ham just what they are missing following his decision to join the Latics rather than the Hammers, he was allowed to carry the ball from the half way line unchallenged before firing an unstoppable drive from 25 yards into the left hand bottom corner of West Ham keeper Henderson`s goal

The game was virtually over on 41 minutes when Boselli got his second of the game, timing a run to beat the off-side trap he coolly chipped Henderson from 18 yards to give the Latics a 1-3 half time lead

West Ham huffed and puffed in the second half, but their laboured performance was in complete contrast to the Latics slick passing game, Martinez`s men were in control and never looked like surrendering their two goal cushion, when the final goal of the game arrived it was no surprise that it was the Latics who scored it

On 84 minutes James McArthur was unceremoniously brought down in the area by West Ham keeper Henderson and the referee pointed to the spot. Most spectators expected Boselli to step up and claim his hat-trick, but the Latics kept to professional protocol and regular penalty taker Jordi Gomez dispatched his effort superbly into the bottom corner with power and pace, giving Henderson no chance of saving it

Good nights work putting the Latics into the fourth round, anyone sense a trip to Wembley in February? If we continue with displays like this then who knows
