Wigan went down to the Liberty Stadium with high hopes of bringing back three points to England. In the previous game, the Latics put in a good performance against an Everton side who were on top form. But that was two weeks ago, and the international break could have made an effect on the team performance.
The game started very low key and lifeless. An early chance fell for Maloney in the 10th minute who tried to place a pass from Kone past Vorm, only to see his timid effort grasped by the Swansea shot stopper.
Up at the other end Michu smashed over a shot from the edge of the area in the 16th minute and this was the overall feel for the first half. Not much happened and the teams went in for half time with the deadlock yet to be broken.
Martinez would have wanted Wigan to come out strong in the second half and push on for the opener, but it was Swansea who did.
In the 64th minute the deadlock was finally broken after Hernandez turned and smashed the ball through Caldwell's legs and into Al Habsi's bottom corner.
Swansea then built on this momentum and Michu headed in from a corner 2 minutes later. The Spaniard was given a free header from 5 yards out after some very poor defending from Wigan.
It looked like a drubbing was on the cards as Swansea moved the ball round well, but Wigan snatched one back through an acrobatic back heel from Emerson Boyce. This ensured the game wasn't over and the momentum shifted into Wigan's favour. 3 goals in four minutes really brought the game to life.
It should have been all level as Beausejour lashed in a fierce cross which was met by Kone's head into the back of the net, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. Replays show that Kone was level with Williams meaning the goal should have stood.
Wigan pressed on for the equaliser and a couple more chances were squandered by Maloney and Di Santo. Fresh legs were injected into the team to try and grab a goal, but in the end it amounted to nothing as Swansea stayed firm and kept hold of all three points.
