Latics 1 Derby 3

The match report has almost got forgotten about with all the hullaballoo that followed the game, three Derby goals inside the first 30 minutes sealed our fate in this match and also that of the manager, Owen Coyle, at the club

The main talking points as the sides lined up before the kick off was new loan signing Will Keane being thrown in at the deep end, making his debut after just one training session with his new team mates and the return to the starting line-up of defender Ivan Ramis after almost a year out with a serious knee injury

With barely a minute on the clock the visitors took the lead, Nick Powell's heavy challenge on Dawkins not only earned him a booking but also had the whole stadium holding its breath as Ivan Ramis looked to have suffered an injury, luckily he hadn't but Craig Bryson punished the Latics, curling the ball round the wall and into the back of the net from 25 yards, 0-1

Derby increased their lead on 15 minutes, Ben Watsons misplaced pass was perfect for Dawkins who gleefully skipped into the area and fired past Nicholls from12 yards, 0-2 and the natives were getting restless

15 minutes later and disaster struck, Chris Martin dribbled into the Latics box, James McClean came in from the side, down went Martin and referee David Coote awarded Derby a penalty, Martin shook himself down and stepped up to send Nicholls the wrong way, 0-3, boos rang out and the players looked ragged

There was a rally just before half time, Stephen Crainey hit a free kick against the bar, but as the whistle went the boos were loud as the players drudged off the pitch

Half time saw Roger Espinoza and Grant Holt replace Ben Watson and Will Keane, Espinoza's introduction brought some much needed energy and drive to teh Latics midfield and for the first time in the game we looked interested

On 50 minutes a right wing cross by Emmerson Boyce found Nick Powell, the young striker met the ball with a powerful header and scored a well taken goal to give the Latics a glimmer of hope, 1-3

A minute after the goal James McArthur had a glorious chance to score but headed agonisingly wide from three yards out, Powell hit the bar and forced Derby keeper Lee Grant into making a great save with a well executed volley, and there were the odd scramble in the goal mouth, but Derby stood strong and the game ended with the visitors taking all the points and we had lost our third home game in side eight days

The fans let their feelings known to the manager and there were angry words between Coyle and some supporters near to the players tunnel as they left the pitch
