Wigan 2-0 Walsall Match Report
I could get used to this. Four home wins on the spin, none of them ever in any doubt. Another dominant display today, again the only negative being we didn't score more, always room to improve.
Paul Cook made one change from the side that beat Plymouth Argyle 1-0 in mid-week. Callum Elder replaced the injured Reece James at left-back, following a good cameo performance from the bench on Tuesday.
Wigan controlled the opening 20 minutes, as they have in every home match this season, but failed to turn possession into any clear cut chances. Step-up Will Grigg. After a string of average performances from the Northern Irish striker, he scored a much needed goal after slotting in from 10 yards following a great cross from Callum Elder.
Nick Powell forced Walsall's 'keeper into a good save before the break. Wigan edged a dull first half, and led 1-0 through Grigg's first goal in his last four games.
Wigan doubled their lead on 53 mins. James Wilson fouled Grigg in the penalty area, allowing him to step-up and slot away the penalty to make it 2-0.
Powell almost added a third when his shot was cleared off the line, and David Perkins came close to scoring his first goal for the club as his deflected strike just missed the target.
Jamie Jones made a smart save late on to deny Walsall a consolation goal. The Saddlers offered very little threat to a dominant home side, who again will be disappointed they didn't score more goals.
Overall, a solid performance from Latics. Another easy victory, our fourth home win and clean sheet in a row.
Man of the match: Will Grigg. Much needed goals, will hopefully spark (no pun intended) him into form and he continue scoring goals.
Up the tics.
