Gillingham 1-1 Wigan Match Report

Gillingham
1 - 1
Wigan

Priestfield Stadium

17/10/2017

Attendance: 4,705

Referee:

Being top of the league didn't last long, did it? We'll leave that talk until May from now on. We drew 1-1 with a well-drilled Gillingham side.

Paul Cook made one change to the side that beat Southend United 3-0 on Saturday. Ivan Toney returned to the starting line-up, replacing Will Grigg.

It was an open first 20 minutes, which saw both sides miss good opportunities. Gavin Massey, Nathan Byrne and Dan Burn all had chances to open the scoring, while Sean Clare came close with a volley for The Gills.

Tom Eaves was destined to put the home side infront on 28 minutes, before Dunkley's perfectly timed interception. Latics finished the first half strongly but were unable to find a breakthrough.

Gillingham took the lead shortly after the break. Clare whipped in a perfect cross, for Eaves to tap-in from close range.

Josh Parker had a great opportunity to double the lead for Gillingham, but sliced his effort wide of the target. The home side continued to dominate the second half, Jamie Jones saved well from Billy Bingham's shot and Chey Dunkley deflected Elliott List's low drive onto the post.

Eventually Latics found a moment of magic from captain Sam Morsy. The Egyptian curled a beauty from 20 yards into the top corner to level the match going into the final 10 minutes.

Noel Hunt replaced the injured Grigg on 85 minutes, which will worry Cook with Latics have an important run of fixtures coming up.

A disappointing night for Wigan after such a good run of form and performances. The performance was similar to the Shrewsbury defeat, never really got going in the final third. Thankfully a individual piece of brilliance from Morsy rescued a point. Hopefully just an off-night for Latics and we'll get back to winning ways on Saturday.

Up the 'tics.
