Referee:

A dream debut for Victor Maffeo. Just turned 17 years old and scoring on his home debut for Wigan, hopefully one to look back on in a few years time- congrats Vic! In the first round of fixtures of the Checkatrade Trophy, Latics drew 1-1 away at Blackpool before winning the penalty-shootout for a bonus points (yep it's an awful competition).

Paul Cook named a strong line-up, which included: Terrell Thomas, Reece James, David Perkins, Lee Evans and Ryan Colclough.

Colclough saw an early effort come back off the post, while Noel Hunt had a shot well saved.

The away side were gifted an opportunity to take the lead when the referee awarded them a penalty for handball. However, Matija Sarkic saved brilliantly from George Miller to keep the score 0-0. Sarkic is the fourth Wigan 'keeper to save a penalty on his debut in the last 4 months, the others were: Jakub Haugaard, Matt Gilks and Adam Bogdan.

It was then Latics' turn to be awarded a penalty, and Lee Evans duly obliged by slamming it into the top left corner to give us a 1-0 lead.

Up step the new wonder kid. Maffeo finished well after being played in by Tyler Gooden to double our lead. Aside from the goal, the young Spaniard does look to have a touch of class. Very confident on the ball, always looking to attack defences and pleased he got a deserved goal.

Boro started the second half well and pulled a goal back through Luke Armstrong on 53 mins.

Hunt then picked up his first goal for the club to give us a commanding 3-1 lead. Gooden provided another assist, crossing for the striker to head into the net.

Then it was Colclough's turn to get on the scoresheet. Luke Burgess turned provider, playing it into Colclough who finished easily from the edge of the six yard box. It was raining goals at the DW Stadium.

Up the tics
