Leighton Baines was conspicuos by his absence at Oakwell this evening, the official line is he has a niggling injury, yet he was spotted at Goodison Park by a few thousand jubilent Evertonians!

The first half of the game saw Latics face their toughest challenge this pre-season with fierce play from the Yorkshire side.

Kirkland saved well from Rickets but at the other end Latics had good chances through Heskey, from a Koumas corner and Landzaat from 10 yards

It was all square at half time

After the break Jason Koumas struck a beauty to put the Latics one up

Michael Brown came on for his Latics debut on 74 mins

The second Latics goal came following a free kick earned by Brown which Koumas took

The ball was judged by the referee to have struck a Barnsley players hand in the defensive wall and he awarded Latics a penalty

Denny Landzaat scored from the spot, sending the home keeper the wrong way

The victory maintains the Latics 100% pre-season record and sets things up nicely for the last game at Elland Road against Leeds on Saturday
