Everton 2 - Wigan Athletic 1

Goodison Park

11/08/2007 3 pm

Attendance: 39,220

Everton 2 Latics 1

Latics first day blues continued against an ordinary Everton team who really should have been there for the taking

Latics failure to gain anything from their first game of the season, again, puts added pressure on Wednesdays game against Middlesbrough

The game started off in glorious sunshine and saw Bramble, Melchiot and Koumas start a league game for the first time in Latics colours and Sibierski also came on in the second half to make his a scoring debut

Everton took the lead on 26 minutes when Leon Osman headed home from all of 14 yards

It is a goal that wont please Hutchings and questions will be asked about Kirklands positioning

Shortly afterwards Arteta burst into the box and fell under a Bramble challange, referee Clattenburg waived away penalty appeals and replays showed he was correct to do so

At the other end Heskey and Folan both went close with long range efforts

In the second half both teams had limitted chances before Everton increased their lead.

Johnson crossed the ball into the box and Anichebe knocked the ball in with his shin

On 66 mins Sibierski made his Latics debut replacing Folan and it was the Frenchman who scored Latics goal

Sibierski threw Latics a lifeline on 80 mins, turning in Paul Scharner's cross from close range.

A full stretch save from Everton keeper Howard kept out a Scharner shot late on but that was it

Star Player

Andreas Granqvist, assured and comfortable, kept Andy Johnson quiet all afternoon

was a good game. i was really worried about koumas but for me that game epitomized everything he is, a nearly player, most certainly not a 5million player. even tony hibbert made him look ordinary and he was awful yesterday. my tip for you would be to play sibierski more, i would have been happy if we had signed him last season before newcastle, hes technically good, strong and can score.

Sibierski'a been injured thats why he didnt start yesterday, he's only played about 25mins in the preseason
