Reading gained their first win of the season as Latics threw away a point right at the death.

Latics started the game with Bent making his first start in place of the injured Heskey.

Kilbane returned to the team in the left back spot following his one game suspension with Boyce dropping to the bench

Wigan had the best of the early play without creating any chances, though Sibierski and Bent looked liked they had met before, unlike last week.

Reading began to come into the game as the first half settled down and Kirkland produced a wonder save from Rossenior when the Reading man was through on goal

Kirkland spoiled his copy book moments later when he spilled a weak shot right into the path of Dave Kitson who tucked the ball home from a yard out

Almost immediately the Latics thought they had a chance to equalise, Koumas danced his way through the Reading team only to be upended by Ingimarsson's knee

The referee pointed to the penalty spot but the assissstant was signaling that the offence had taken place outside the area

TV replays show that Ingimarsson's foot was indeed outside the area, but his knee, which brought Koumas down, was inside and penalty would have been the correct decision

Koumas took the free kick and his shot cannoned back off the bar causing lots of panic in the fumbling Reading defense.

The second half started with the Latics pushing for an equaliser and it came on 50 minutes

Koumas swung in a delightful corner from the right and Bent easily lost his marker to power a header past the static Hahnemann in the Reading goal

Latics created more chances as the game wore on and Aghahowa, who was on for Sibierski, should have done better when clean through

Aggy reacted to a Scharner through ball and found himself one on one with Hahnemann who lunged feet first at the Latics striker and clipped him.

Aghahowa tried to stay on his feet as he went past the keeper, giving time for the Reading defense to get back and smother the chance

If the striker had gone down he would have left the referee with no chance but to send off Hahnemann

Despite having the best chances of the game Latics were hit with a sucker punch in the 90th minute.

Following a throw-in Reading worked the ball down Latics left side and Harper stole in at the near post to smash past Kirkland
