After starting out at Brentford, Bent moved to Crystal Palace during the 1997/98 season and went from there to Port Vale, then on to Sheffield United, where he made his name, scoring 15 goals in 32 games in the 1999/00 season

He came to the Latics on loan in August 2007 and after a slow start found his feet

Currently the teams leading goal scorer with a goal every two games.

At the end of the 07/08 season, Steve Bruce decided not to take up the option of signing Marcus Bent permanently for 1 million and has since returned to Charlton Athletic.
