Pen Pic

Versatile Austria international defender who completed his move to Wigan in January 2006 from Norwegian outfit Brann Bergen.

Earned his trade as a centre-back but capable of playing across the defence or in midfield, Scharner is quick and strong in the air.

Scored on his Latics debut in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final against Arsenal in January 2006.

Began his career at Austria Vienna before moving to Norway in 2004 and played for his country against England in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers.

Paul Scharner left for pastures new at the end of the 2009/10 season
