The former Chelsea full-back moved to Wigan Athletic in June 2007 on a free transfer from French side Rennes.

The move marks a quick return to the Barclays Premier League for Melchiot, who only moved to France from Birmingham City in August 2006.

The Dutchman joined Birmingham in July 2004 from Chelsea, where he proved himself a fine player.

His time at Stamford Bridge gave him a taste of Champions League football and he has plenty of big-match experience.

Should be a good signing for the Latics bringing a wealth of experience to the team
